STILLEN – the impossibility of movement, captivated dancers

On a trip to Japan in the summer of 1999 I learned about japanese bondage techniques and have been experimenting with bondage since then. I am less concerned with subjugation or even torture than with the aspect of pausing, of voluntary restraint. As a choreographer I am fascinated by the prevention of movement, the decision for a certain posture, the finding of form; furthermore, the focus of the smallest movements, as the body permanently produces them even in a fixed state. It is not about freedom, it is about statement and confession. The ropes and bandages are metaphors for feelings that hold and constrict, but also satisfy the need for protection and security.

STILLEN – die Verunmöglichung von Bewegung, gefesselte Tänzer

Auf einer Japan-Reise im Sommer 1999 lernte ich Bondage-Techniken kennen und experimentiere seitdem mit dem Fesseln von Körpern. Dabei geht es mir weniger um Unterwerfung oder gar Folter sondern vielmehr um den Aspekt des Innehaltens, der freiwilligen Beschränkung. Als Choreograph fasziniert mich die Verhinderung von Bewegung, die Entscheidung für eine bestimmte Haltung, das Finden von Form; darüber hinaus die Sichtbarmachung kleinster Bewegungen, wie sie der Körper auch im fixierten Zustand permanent produziert. Es geht nicht um Freiheit, es geht um Stellungnahme und Bekenntnis. Die Seile und Bandagen sind Metaphern für Gefühle, die gefangen halten und einengen, die aber auch das Bedürfnis nach Schutz und Geborgenheit stillen.
