“Tools aims at the reestablishment of unity between body and spirit in academic dance, but it is also a moment in the career of a dancer where he emancipates himself from technique, as a dominatrix would transform herself into a compliant lover. The project Tools (and tricks for survival in outer space) created for the Ballet de l’Opéra National du Rhin in February 2003, was Felix Ruckert’s first attempt to apply his corpus of improvisational and choreographic principles – the Tools System – outside of his own company and on a bigger group of dancers. In October 2004, he renewed the experience with the Vietnam National Ballet with Venus in Hanoi (or the art of Getting Lost). Each piece, created with the Tools system uses a specific set of tools, rules and choreographic systems that give the piece its unique rythm and shape. But the specific choreography of every performance highly relies on the artistic skills of the dancers. They are the creators. Each Tools version has a specific color and taste and reflects the human specificities and cultural particularisms that fuel into the working process. The intervention of Felix Ruckert questions the ways of how a dance piece is created within a classical company and his aim is to support and foster the dancers’ individual personality and force of proposition.
Felix Ruckert has developped «tokyo tools» with the Star Dancers Ballet, Tokyo in a 6 weeks residence in May and June, 2005.
